Matthew was sitting at a tax collection place when Jesus saw him. Jesus said, "Follow me," and Matthew got up and went with him.

Matthew later hosted a meal for Jesus and other tax collectors. Some people questioned why Jesus ate with them. Jesus said that a doctor is needed by the sick and that he had come to call people who needed help.

Matthew became one of the twelve disciples. The Gospel of Matthew is named after him and tells about Jesus' life and teaching.
