Matthew was sitting at a tax collection place when Jesus passed by. Jesus saw him and said, "Follow me." Matthew got up and followed Jesus.
Tax collectors gathered money for the Roman rulers. Many people disliked them, so they may have been surprised that Jesus called Matthew to be one of his disciples. Jesus welcomed people and invited them to learn from him.
Matthew left his work behind and began travelling with Jesus. Later, Matthew hosted a meal where Jesus ate with tax collectors and others. Jesus explained that he had come to call people who needed help, like a doctor comes for the sick.
