About the story

Jesus began gathering disciples as he travelled around Galilee. Beside the lake, he called Simon Peter and Andrew, who were casting a fishing net. He invited them to follow him and become fishers of people. They left their nets and went with him.

Jesus then called James and John, who were mending nets in a boat with their father. They left the boat to follow him too. Later, Jesus saw Matthew at a tax collection place and invited him to come along. Matthew got up and followed.

These men had different jobs, but each chose to learn from Jesus. They travelled with him, listened to his teaching and saw how he helped people. They became part of the group of disciples who shared his work.
