About the story
Long ago, people settled together and began building a city and a tall tower. They made bricks and worked as a team because they all spoke the same language. They wanted to make a name for themselves and not spread out across the earth.
The LORD saw the city and tower. He changed the people's speech so they could no longer understand one another. The building stopped, and the people spread across the earth. The city was called Babel.
The story tells how many languages and peoples came to be. God saw the builders and their plans, and the tower could not make them greater than God.
