About the story
Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector in Jericho. He was short and could not see Jesus through the crowd, so he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree. Jesus stopped beneath it, looked up and called Zacchaeus by name.
Jesus asked Zacchaeus to come down because he wanted to stay at his house that day. Zacchaeus welcomed him with joy. Some people complained that Jesus was visiting a tax collector, but Jesus chose to meet with him.
Afterwards Zacchaeus promised to give half of his possessions to the poor and repay four times as much to anyone he had cheated. Jesus said he had come to seek and save the lost. Zacchaeus's actions showed that his meeting with Jesus had changed him.
