A large crowd gathered by the Sea of Galilee to hear Jesus teach. The people pressed close around him, so Jesus stepped into a boat and sat down. The boat was just off the shore, where everyone could see and hear him.
Jesus told the crowd stories and taught them many things. The people listened from the land while he spoke from the boat. The water made a natural space between Jesus and the crowd.
Jesus often used everyday things in his teaching. On this day he taught beside the lake, where fishermen, boats and seeds were familiar parts of life. When he finished, he explained more to his disciples.
