““The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed,”

Read the story together

A short version of the story to read aloud before colouring, with questions to ask afterwards.

Jesus returned to Nazareth, the town where he had grown up. On the Sabbath he went to the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and someone handed him a scroll from the prophet Isaiah.

Jesus read words about bringing good news to the poor, freedom to captives and sight to the blind. Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back and sat down. Everyone looked at him.

Jesus told them that the words had come true that day. At first the people were impressed, but then some questioned how Jesus could say this, since they knew his family.

Questions to ask

  1. What did Jesus read from?
  2. What did Jesus read from?
  3. What good news did the words from Isaiah describe?
