“Therefore Mary took a pound of ointment of pure nard, very precious, and anointed Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment.”
Read the story together
A short version of the story to read aloud before colouring, with questions to ask afterwards.
Jesus was at a dinner in Bethany, at the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. Martha served the meal, and Lazarus was among those sitting at the table with Jesus.
Mary brought a jar of very precious perfume. She poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped them with her hair. The whole house filled with the fragrance.
Judas objected that the perfume could have been sold and the money given to the poor. Jesus told him to leave Mary alone. He said she had kept the perfume for the day of his burial. The meal took place shortly before Jesus went to Jerusalem.
Questions to ask
- What did Mary bring?
- What did Mary pour on Jesus' feet?
- Why did Jesus tell Judas to leave Mary alone?
