The story behind this colouring sheet
The Roman emperor, Caesar Augustus, ordered everyone to go back to their family's home town to be counted.
Joseph's family came from Bethlehem, the town where King David had been born long ago. So Joseph and Mary had to make the long journey there from Nazareth.
It was a tiring trip of many days over hills and dusty roads. Mary's baby was due to be born very soon.
At last they saw the little town of Bethlehem. It was crowded with people who had come to be counted too. God was keeping an old promise: the prophet Micah had said that a great king would one day come from Bethlehem.
Talk about it
- Which animal is helping Mary on the journey?
- Why did Mary and Joseph have to go to Bethlehem?
- God used a ruler's order to keep His promise about Bethlehem. How does God work through things we don't expect?
