Balaam was travelling on his donkey when an angel stood in the road. Balaam could not see the angel, but the donkey could. She turned away from the path and tried to avoid the angel.
Balaam became angry when the donkey stopped. Then God opened the donkey's mouth, and she spoke to him. She asked why he had struck her three times. Balaam answered her, and then God helped him see the angel.
The angel told Balaam to speak only the words God gave him. Balaam listened and went on. This unusual story reminds us to pay attention and be ready to learn, even when help comes in a surprising way.
