Read the story together

A short version of the story to read aloud before colouring, with questions to ask afterwards.

John the Baptist lived in the desert and told people to turn back to God. He said they should get ready because someone greater was coming. John was speaking about Jesus.

John wore a cloak made from camel's hair and a leather belt. He ate locusts and wild honey. People came from the countryside and Jerusalem to hear him. They confessed their sins, and John baptised them in the River Jordan.

John said that the one coming after him was much greater. John could baptise with water, but Jesus would baptise people with the Holy Spirit. John's message helped people get ready to meet Jesus.

Questions to ask

  1. Who told people to get ready for Jesus?
  2. What food did John eat in the desert?
  3. How did John help people prepare for Jesus?
