The story behind this colouring sheet

On the night Jesus was born, there were shepherds out in the fields near Bethlehem.

Shepherds had a hard job. They stayed outside all night long to protect their sheep from wolves and other dangers. They would light fires to keep warm and take turns staying awake.

Most people didn't think shepherds were very important. They were ordinary, hard-working people.

But God had a surprise for these shepherds. Of all the people in the world, they were going to be the very first to hear that the Saviour had been born!

Talk about it

  1. What animals were the shepherds looking after?
  2. Why did the shepherds stay outside all night?
  3. God chose ordinary shepherds to hear the good news first. What does that tell us about who matters to God?
