The story behind this colouring sheet
Advent means "coming". It is the four Sundays before Christmas, when Christians get ready to celebrate Jesus coming into the world.
Many families and churches use an Advent wreath — a ring of evergreen leaves with four candles. Each Sunday one more candle is lit, so the light grows brighter and brighter as Christmas comes closer. Some wreaths have a fifth candle in the middle, lit on Christmas Day for Jesus.
Hundreds of years before Jesus was born, the prophet Isaiah wrote: "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light."
Jesus is that great light. The candles remind us that He came to bring light and hope to the whole world.
Talk about it
- How many candles can you count on the wreath?
- What does the word Advent mean?
- Jesus is called a great light. How does Jesus bring light to people's lives?
