The story behind this colouring sheet

Zechariah was a priest who loved God. He and his wife Elizabeth had prayed for a baby for many years, but now they were both old.

One day it was Zechariah's turn to burn sweet-smelling incense in the temple. Suddenly an angel appeared beside the altar! Zechariah was very frightened.

"Don't be afraid," said the angel Gabriel. "God has heard your prayer. Elizabeth will have a son, and you will call him John." John would grow up to get people ready for Jesus.

Zechariah found it hard to believe such amazing news, so God gave him a sign: he would not be able to speak until the baby was born. When he came out of the temple, the people waiting outside knew something wonderful had happened.

Talk about it

  1. Who came to see Zechariah in the temple?
  2. What had Zechariah and Elizabeth been praying for?
  3. Zechariah found God's promise hard to believe. Is there something you find hard to trust God about?
