Read the story together

A short version of the story to read aloud before colouring, with questions to ask afterwards.

King Saul was searching for David, and David and his men were hiding in a cave. Saul came into the cave, but David's men stayed back. David moved quietly and cut a small piece from Saul's robe.

David's men thought he should hurt Saul, but David would not do it. Saul was still the king, and David chose to leave the matter with God. When Saul left the cave, David called after him and showed him the piece of robe.

David had an opportunity to take revenge, but he chose not to harm Saul. He wanted God to judge fairly. David's choice reminds us that we can step away from anger and choose a peaceful response.

Questions to ask

  1. What is David holding?
  2. Where were David and his men hiding?
  3. Why did David choose not to hurt Saul when he had the chance?
