About the book of 1 Samuel

First Samuel begins with Hannah, who prayed for a baby and gave her son Samuel to serve God. Young Samuel heard God calling him in the night and grew up to be a great prophet.

The book tells how Israel got its first king, Saul, and how God chose a shepherd boy called David to be the next king.

It includes one of the most famous Bible stories of all: David facing the giant Goliath with just a sling and five smooth stones, trusting that "the battle is the Lord's".
