About the story
David was the youngest of Jesse's eight sons, and his job was looking after the family's sheep near Bethlehem.
David was a brave shepherd who protected his flock from lions and bears. He also loved music, playing the harp and singing songs to God.
When God sent the prophet Samuel to choose a new king, Samuel looked at David's tall older brothers. But God said, "I look at the heart." God chose David, and Samuel anointed him with oil. Soon David was playing the harp for King Saul in the palace.
