Jacob travelled toward his mother's family. When night came, he stopped in an open place and used a stone for a pillow. As he slept, he dreamed of a ladder that reached from the earth up to heaven. Angels were going up and down on it. God spoke to Jacob and promised to be with him wherever he went. God also promised that Jacob's family would grow and that the land would belong to his descendants. When Jacob woke, he knew the place was special. He set up the stone and named the place Bethel. Jacob continued his journey, carrying God's promise with him. The dream reminded him that God was with him, even far from home.
