“Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to those who were sitting down, likewise also of the fish as much as they desired.”
Read the story together
A short version of the story to read aloud before colouring, with questions to ask afterwards.
The people had found a grassy place near the lake and sat down. Jesus saw that the crowd needed food. A boy had brought five barley loaves and two fish, and Andrew told Jesus about them.
Jesus took the loaves and gave thanks to God. Then he shared the food with the disciples, who passed it to the people. The fish was shared too, and everyone had as much as they wanted.
Jesus began with a small meal, but it became enough for the crowd. After the people had eaten, Jesus asked the disciples to gather the pieces left over so that nothing would be wasted.
Questions to ask
- What did Jesus hold as he gave thanks?
- Who helped Jesus share the food?
- Why do you think Jesus asked the disciples to gather the leftover pieces?
