“So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with broken pieces from the five barley loaves, which were left over by those who had eaten.”
Read the story together
A short version of the story to read aloud before colouring, with questions to ask afterwards.
After the crowd had eaten, Jesus told his disciples to gather the pieces of bread that were left. He wanted nothing to be wasted. The disciples moved among the people and collected the pieces.
They filled twelve baskets with leftovers from the five barley loaves. Thousands of people had eaten, and still there was food remaining. The disciples could see how much more there was than the small meal they had started with.
The people saw the sign Jesus had done and said that he was the prophet who was to come into the world. Jesus sent the disciples away by boat and went up the mountain by himself.
Questions to ask
- What did the disciples collect?
- How many baskets did they fill?
- What does the amount left over tell you about the meal Jesus provided?
