About the story
Jesus told stories to help people understand God's kingdom. He said it was like a tiny mustard seed that grew into a large plant where birds could rest. He compared it to yeast mixed through dough, making the whole batch rise. In another story, a man found treasure hidden in a field and gladly sold what he owned to buy the field. A merchant found one precious pearl and sold everything to get it. Jesus also described a large fishing net that gathered many fish, which the fishermen sorted on shore. Each parable used familiar things people could picture: seeds, bread, treasure, pearls and fishing. Together they invited listeners to think about the value and growth of God's kingdom.
