Memory verse

“The priests who bore the ark of the LORD’s covenant stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan; and all Israel crossed over on dry ground, until all the nation had passed completely over the Jordan.”
Joshua 3:17 · WEBBE

Read the story together

A short version of the story to read aloud before colouring, with questions to ask afterwards.

The Israelites were ready to enter the land God had promised them. They came to the Jordan River, which was overflowing its banks. The people camped beside it and waited for Joshua's instructions.

Joshua told the priests to carry the ark of the covenant and walk ahead of the people. When the priests' feet touched the water, the river stopped flowing upstream. The water stood far away, and the people crossed on dry ground.

The priests stood firm in the middle of the riverbed with the ark while all the Israelites passed over. They waited until everyone had crossed safely. This was a special day for the people. God had made a way through the river, and the Israelites could enter the land. They remembered that God was with Joshua, just as God had been with Moses.

Questions to ask

  1. What did the priests carry?
  2. What happened to the river when the priests stepped into it?
  3. Why did the priests wait in the middle of the river until everyone crossed?
