Memory verse
“The sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the nation had avenged themselves of their enemies. Isn’t this written in the book of Jashar? The sun stayed in the middle of the sky, and didn’t hurry to go down about a whole day.”
Read the story together
A short version of the story to read aloud before colouring, with questions to ask afterwards.
Joshua and the Israelites were helping the people of Gibeon, who had asked for help. They travelled through the night to reach them. During the battle, Joshua wanted more daylight so the Israelites could finish their work.
Joshua prayed to God in front of the people. The Bible says that the sun stood still and the moon stayed in place for a long time. There was more daylight that day, and the Israelites were able to continue.
This was a remarkable event, and the Bible says there had never been a day like it before or since. Joshua trusted God and asked for help. The story reminds us how God helped Joshua lead the Israelites. We can read the account together and wonder at what God did, while remembering that the fighting happened long ago and the page shows only Joshua looking up at the sky.
Questions to ask
- What two lights are in the sky?
- What did Joshua ask God for?
- What does the Bible say happened to the sun and moon that day?
