Memory verse
“The king loved Esther more than all the women, and she obtained favour and kindness in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown on her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.”

A short version of the story to read aloud before colouring, with questions to ask afterwards.
Esther was a young Jewish woman who lived with her cousin Mordecai in the Persian city of Susa. When Esther's parents died, Mordecai cared for her. She grew up to be kind and wise.
King Xerxes wanted to choose a new queen. Esther was taken to the palace with many other young women. Mordecai told Esther not to tell anyone that she was Jewish. He visited the palace gate to learn how she was doing.
The king liked Esther more than the others and chose her to be queen. He placed a royal crown on her head and held a great feast. Esther had a new place in the palace, and Mordecai still watched over her. Her story was not finished, because soon she would need to make a brave choice for her people.
Questions to ask
- What did Esther wear on her head?
- Who cared for Esther when she was young?
- Why do you think Mordecai asked Esther to keep her family background private?
