Memory verse
“When the king saw Esther the queen standing in the court, she obtained favour in his sight; and the king held out to Esther the golden sceptre that was in his hand. So Esther came near and touched the top of the sceptre.”
Read the story together
A short version of the story to read aloud before colouring, with questions to ask afterwards.
Esther knew that the Jews in Persia were in danger. Mordecai had asked her to speak to the king, but there was a rule: anyone who entered the inner court without being called could be punished. Esther had not been invited to see the king.
She asked Mordecai to gather the Jews in Susa and fast for three days. Esther and her attendants would do the same. Then she would go to the king, even though it was dangerous. She said that if she perished, she perished.
On the third day Esther put on her royal robes and stood in the court. King Xerxes saw her and held out his golden sceptre. This showed that he welcomed her. Esther came near and touched its top. The king listened and offered to hear her request. Esther had taken a brave first step to help her people.
Questions to ask
- What did the king hold out to Esther?
- What did Esther ask the Jews to do before she went to the king?
- Why was entering the king's court a brave choice for Esther?
