Memory verse
“When she recognised Peter’s voice, she didn’t open the gate for joy, but ran in and reported that Peter was standing in front of the gate.”
Read the story together
A short version of the story to read aloud before colouring, with questions to ask afterwards.
Peter had escaped from prison and went to the house of Mary, the mother of John Mark. Many believers were gathered there praying. Peter knocked at the gate.
A servant girl named Rhoda came to answer. When she recognized Peter's voice, she was so happy that she forgot to open the gate. She ran inside and told everyone that Peter was standing outside.
The people said she was out of her mind, but Rhoda kept saying it was true. They thought it might be Peter's angel. Peter continued knocking, so at last they opened the gate. They were amazed to see him. Peter motioned for them to be quiet and told them how the Lord had brought him out of prison. Then he asked them to tell James and the other believers. Rhoda's joyful news was right, even though her friends did not believe her at first.
Questions to ask
- Who came to the gate?
- Why did Rhoda run back inside?
- Why do you think the believers found Peter's escape hard to believe?
