“But, lest we cause them to stumble, go to the sea, cast a hook, and take up the first fish that comes up. When you have opened its mouth, you will find a stater coin. Take that, and give it to them for me and you.””
Read the story together
A short version of the story to read aloud before colouring, with questions to ask afterwards.
Some men who collected the temple tax asked Peter whether Jesus paid it. Peter went into the house and spoke with Jesus. Jesus explained that kings collect taxes from other people, not from their own children.
Jesus told Peter to go to the lake, cast a hook and take the first fish he caught. He would find a coin in the fish's mouth, enough to pay the tax for both of them.
Peter went to the water and did as Jesus said. He found the coin and used it to pay the tax. Jesus wanted to avoid causing unnecessary trouble, and Peter followed his instructions.
Questions to ask
- Who went fishing?
- What did Peter find in the fish?
- How much was the coin meant to pay?
