Memory verse
“Joses, who by the apostles was also called Barnabas (which is, being interpreted, Son of Encouragement), a Levite, a man of Cyprus by race,”
Read the story together
A short version of the story to read aloud before colouring, with questions to ask afterwards.
The believers in Jerusalem cared for one another. They shared what they had, and people who owned land or houses sometimes sold them. The money was brought to the apostles so it could be used to help anyone who had a need.
One believer was Joses, a Levite from Cyprus. The apostles called him Barnabas, which means "son of encouragement." Barnabas owned a field. He sold it and brought the money to the apostles.
Barnabas did not keep the money for himself. He trusted the church leaders to share it with people who needed help. Later, Barnabas travelled with Paul to tell others about Jesus. He welcomed new believers and encouraged them. The early church remembered him as a generous man whose actions matched his name.
Questions to ask
- What did Barnabas bring to the apostles?
- What did Barnabas do with his field?
- Why was "son of encouragement" a fitting name for Barnabas?
