Elijah and Elisha walked together toward the Jordan River. Elijah asked Elisha what he wanted before they parted. Elisha asked for a double share of Elijah's spirit. As the two men walked and talked, a chariot and horses of fire appeared between them. Elijah went up into heaven in a whirlwind, and Elisha watched. Elijah's cloak fell, and Elisha picked it up. He returned to the Jordan and struck the water with the cloak. The water parted, and Elisha crossed back. This story tells how Elijah's time as a prophet ended and Elisha continued his work.
