Memory verse
“Then Haman took the clothing and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, and had him ride through the city square, and proclaimed before him, “Thus it shall be done to the man whom the king delights to honour!””
Read the story together
A short version of the story to read aloud before colouring, with questions to ask afterwards.
King Xerxes could not sleep one night, so he asked for the royal records to be read aloud. He heard that Mordecai had once uncovered a plan against the king. Mordecai had never been rewarded for helping.
The king asked Haman what should be done for someone the king wished to honour. Haman thought the king meant him. He suggested royal clothing, a horse, and a public ride through the city. The king told Haman to do those things for Mordecai.
Haman dressed Mordecai in the king's robes and led him through Susa on the king's horse. Haman called out that this was how the king honoured someone. Mordecai returned to the palace gate afterward, and Haman went home sadly. The honour surprised Haman, but Mordecai had helped the king and was now recognized. Later, he would continue to help Esther protect their people.
Questions to ask
- What animal did Mordecai ride?
- Who led the horse through the city?
- Why did the king decide Mordecai should be honoured?
