Read the story together
A short version of the story to read aloud before colouring, with questions to ask afterwards.
Jesus called himself the good shepherd. A shepherd knew the sheep and cared for them, leading them to grass and water. Jesus said he was different from a hired worker who might run away when danger came. The good shepherd stays with the sheep and protects them, even at great cost. Jesus wanted people to know that he cared for them and would not abandon them. He also said that he knew his sheep, and they knew his voice. The picture of a shepherd with his flock helped people understand Jesus' care. We can remember his words when we see sheep in a field or hear a familiar voice calling us.
Questions to ask
- How many sheep can you see?
- What does a shepherd do for sheep?
- Why did Jesus call himself the good shepherd?
