John wrote that our love for God begins with God's love for us. We do not have to earn that love by being perfect. God loved people first, and that gives us a reason to love God and care for one another.
Children learn about love through everyday actions. Someone may welcome them, listen to them, share with them or comfort them when they are sad. They can also offer care to other people by including a friend, helping at home or saying something kind. These actions do not make God's love start; they are a way to answer the love God has already shown. John wanted his readers to remember where love begins, so they could keep showing it in their own lives.
