Read the story together

A short version of the story to read aloud before colouring, with questions to ask afterwards.

The Bible begins by telling us that God created the heavens and the earth. Before the world was here, God was. The first verse is a short beginning to the story of creation, which goes on to describe the sky, land, seas, plants, animals and people.

When we look around, we can notice many parts of the world: bright stars, wide oceans, tall trees and tiny insects. People can learn about how these things work and care for them. Christians believe the world is God's creation, so they can respond with wonder and responsibility. This verse does not list every detail of creation; it gives the big idea that the world and everything in it began with God. We can enjoy the earth and do our part to look after it.

Questions to ask

  1. What can you see in the sky?
  2. What is one part of the earth you enjoy?
  3. How can we take care of the world around us?
