Memory verse

“Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.””
Joshua 1:9 · WEBBE

Read the story together

A short version of the story to read aloud before colouring, with questions to ask afterwards.

After Moses died, Joshua was chosen to lead the Israelites. They were camped beside the Jordan River and would soon cross into the land God had promised them. Joshua had a big responsibility. God told him to be strong and courageous and reminded him that he would be with him wherever he went.

Joshua's courage did not mean he never felt worried. He could remember God's promise and lead the people one step at a time. Children also face new or difficult things, such as learning a skill or joining a group. They can ask for help, practise and remember that caring people are beside them. This verse reminds readers that God stays with them, and encourages them to keep going when a task feels hard.

Questions to ask

  1. Who is standing by the river?
  2. What helps you feel brave when you try something new?
  3. How can Joshua's story encourage someone facing a big responsibility?
