Memory verse

“But the tax collector, standing far away, wouldn’t even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his chest, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’”
Luke 18:13 · WEBBE

Read the story together

A short version of the story to read aloud before colouring, with questions to ask afterwards.

Jesus told a story to people who were sure they were more righteous than everyone else. Two men went to the temple to pray. A Pharisee stood and listed the good things he did. A tax collector stood far away, lowered his eyes and asked God to be merciful. Jesus said that the tax collector went home right with God, because people who lift themselves up will be brought low, and those who humble themselves will be lifted up. The story teaches us not to boast or look down on others. We can be honest with God about our mistakes and ask for help. God listens to humble prayers.

Questions to ask

  1. Where are the two men praying?
  2. Which man asks God for mercy?
  3. Why is it better to speak honestly to God than to boast?
